Building Culture Day 2024 at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam
The Building Culture Day on the 14th of September 2024 is an opportunity to celebrate and explore the diversity and importance of building culture. It is a chance to sharpen the heritage and design of our built environment. The University of Applied Sciences Potsdam is participating with various lectures and a campus tour.
In many respects, the term Building Culture encompasses the design of buildings, landscapes, infrastructure and public spaces as well as issues of urban planning and development. In the coming years, there will be an increased focus on sustainable building with environmentally friendly products and construction methods in order to emphasise an essential dimension of good building culture.
The Day of Building Culture will become an annual nationwide day of action. In the coming years, interested parties can look forward to a wide range of events, including project visits, guided tours, walks, workshops, excursions, lectures, exhibitions and activities for children and young people.
The guiding principle of the Day of Building Culture remains to focus on the design of our built environment and to scrutinise how this influences the way we live together. Projects from various areas will take centre stage, including the conversion and repurposing of existing buildings, participatory processes for development projects, climate-friendly construction, environmentally friendly energy concepts, engineering structures such as bridges, infrastructure projects, monuments and landscape and open space design.
The FHP will be focussing on two topics on Building Culture Day: the development of the site from a barracks to a place of teaching and learning and building culture in teaching and research.
The first block from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm will focus on the development of the site to date. This is linked to questions such as: How is it possible to redesign and expand a site used for military purposes with barracks buildings, an armoured hall and an officers' mess in such a way that it meets the requirements of modern teaching? What other requirements arise from student life and interaction on the campus? How can this location be made accessible and integrated into the surrounding area? And last but not least: How does the FHP see itself in this context?
After the lunch break, the FHP will present the profile line Design ? Build ? Preserve from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm, in which researchers, lecturers and students at the FHP develop solutions for sustainable urban development, innovative urban planning, efficient planning and the preservation of buildings. The aim of this profile line is to jointly shape the future of the construction industry and work towards a sustainable and liveable environment for future generations. Lectures from this profile line will present selected aspects of this profile line to the public.
