Exhibition Opening: Peter Behrens in Berlin and Brandenburg

Collage von Bauten Peter Behrens

Under the guiding principle of "research-based learning", students at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam have developed an exhibition that shows the built work of Peter Behrens in the Berlin / Brandenburg region and the current state of research in the form of a "review". The exhibition opens on the 28th of June 2023 at 6.00 pm.

Methods for seeing, visualising, understanding & learning
Behind the working title "Peter Behrens in Berlin and Brandenburg" is an ongoing elective course under the direction of Prof. Dr. Silvia Malcovati and Prof. Bernd Bess in cooperation with Prof. em. Hartmut Frank from HafenCity University in Hamburg. The discourse approaches the topic from different perspectives, which are essential as a basis for design thinking when dealing with existing architectural structures.
Maximilian Meisse (architectural photography), Jens We?el (model making) and Roberto Zitelli (visualisation) supported the students with their expertise in working on the diverse disciplines.

About the architect
Peter Behrens (1868 – 1940) was a multi-talented architect and is considered the most important industrial designer of the early 20th century. He saw industrial development as an important element of social change, which is why his designs were based on the fusion of art and technology. Behrens was a successful painter, graphic artist and typographer. He was a pioneer in the development and realisation of a holistically conceived design in the sense of a "corporate identity". As a teacher of Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and, for a short time, Le Corbusier, he was a key pioneer of Bauhaus art.

Research-based teaching and learning
At the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, students are actively involved in research and development projects in a variety of ways. The didactic concept of "research-based learning" gives students the opportunity to explore a subject area independently, acquire methodological skills and specialised knowledge and actively help shape research processes.
