Inaugural Lecture by Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Maren Brakebusch

Prof. Maren Brakebusch
? Lidia Tirri

To mark her appointment as part-time Professor of Garden and Landscape Architecture at the Department of CITY | BUILDING | CULTURE, Professor Maren Brakebusch will give her inaugural lecture entitled "The Nature of the City".

On the one hand, "the nature of the city" refers to the essence of a city, which manifests itself in the culture, the social dimension, the structural substance and thus above all in the open space. On the other hand, it also means "the landscape in the city", i.e. the space between the buildings, which needs to be designed. Not as a subsequent decoration of an already conceived and built structure, but as an integrative element or even before the architecture itself. Understanding landscape as a cultural process requires the building task to be measured spatially and functionally and, in particular, tailored to the needs of the users.

The development of this urban fabric is facing major global and local changes that are impacting our urban landscapes at a rapid pace. "Thinking the city from the landscape" proposes a change of perspective and, based on a deeper understanding of the conditions and genesis of the undeveloped space, identifies potential for the increasingly dense urban body and is at the same time an inspiration for the building task itself.
