Innovation Day Road Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam

Rainer Genilke, State Secretary for Infrastructure and State Planning of the State of Brandenburg, opened the Road Innovation Day at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam on Wednesday, the 6th of September 2023. New developments in road construction were presented under the motto "Sustainability and CO2 reduction".

State Secretary Rainer Genilke: "Innovations have been a high priority for Brandenburg's road construction administration for many years. Our aim is to meet the increasing demands of resource protection and the effects of climate change. At the same time, we must ensure the reliability of the infrastructure. An important step is therefore to make road construction as sustainable as possible in terms of the use of building materials and energy. I am delighted that the experts at the Road Construction Innovation Day are driving forward progress in sustainable construction technology through professional dialogue."

"Together at today's Road Construction Innovation Day, we are providing impetus for the sustainable design of our transport infrastructure - environmentally conscious and pioneering at the same time. I am delighted that we have brought together experts, researchers and students here at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences, in close cooperation with the Association of Road Construction and Transport Engineers Berlin-Brandenburg and the State Road Administration, to jointly shape the roads of tomorrow," said the President of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Prof. Dr. Eva Schmitt-Rodermund, at the opening ceremony.

The programme included discussions and presentations. One of the topics was the use of low-temperature asphalt, which can achieve energy savings of around 30 per cent in road construction compared to conventional methods. As a result, emissions and thus CO2 emissions are also reduced.

Cold recycling is another construction method that achieves energy savings. In addition, removed road materials can be reused for the renewal of road pavements. Other topics at the Innovation Day included the effects of climate change on roads, ways to save CO2 during transport and a presentation on the use of so-called ClAir asphalt, which both reduces noise and absorbs nitrogen oxides from vehicle emissions.

The event is organised by the Association of Road Construction and Traffic Engineers VSVI in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam and the State Road Administration.
