Concept for the Sustainable Restoration and Energy-Efficient Refurbishment of the Former Bavarian State Representation in Bonn

The project is to evaluate the former Bavarian State Representation of Sep Ruf in Bonn from a structural, energy, monument preservation and economic point of view.

Project Objective:

The German Foundation for Monument Protection acquired its new headquarters in Schlegelstra?e in Bonn at the end of 2009 and moved in at the end of 2010. The building is located in the former government quarter and was originally built in 1955 as the representation of the state of Bavaria to the federal government by the Munich architect Sep Ruf (1908 -1982). It was one of the first newly built state representations in Bonn. Sep Ruf's complete work also includes the Chancellor's Bungalow in Bonn 1963/64 and the German Pavilion Group at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, making Ruf one of the most important representatives of post-war modernism in West Germany. With the study on the sustainable restoration and energy-efficient refurbishment of this exemplary administrative building from the 1950s, the German Foundation for Monument Protection is acting as a role model and would like to present new, transferable findings and solutions.

Within the framework of the planned project, the following aspects are to be researched, evaluated and published:

Building design and energy objectives

  • Energy saving in building operation
  • Consideration of grey energy in materials and components used
  • Life cycle analysis (LCA) to determine the total energy demand
  • Optimal user comfort and building climate
  • Optimisation of building protection

Design and monument preservation goals

  • Evaluation of the existing building including modifications of past years
  • Preservation and restoration of the central design elements of the original design by Sep Ruf
  • Visual experience of the building's construction history

Economic goals

  • Investigation of investment and amortisation in relation to the possible
  • total energy savings
